Romano reveals two Man Utd transfers hinge on ‘crucial’ double deal as Spurs send ‘message’

Aug 17, 2023

Fabrizio Romano insists that the futures of Manchester United duo Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek are “crucial” to the final days of the Red Devils’ transfer window.

The Red Devils have signed Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana so far this summer and they’ve been keen to bring in another new midfielder all summer.

Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat has been linked all summer with claims in Italy that Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag made a ‘promise’ to sign him once the Premier League club was in a position to afford the deal.

The most recent link has seen Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ‘offered’ to Man Utd for £30m with Ten Hag still ‘urging’ the club to sign another midfielder.

The Red Devils boss and his recruitment team had expected to raise more funds from sales with some reports earlier in the summer insisting that Man Utd were aiming to sell £100m worth of players to supplement their budget.

But they’ve only raised around £32m from departures so far and now transfer expert Romano has revealed that potential deals for Amrabat or Hojbjerg hinge on McTominay and Van de Beek’s futures.

Romano wrote in his Caught Offside column: “On United, I want to clarify that it’s true that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is an option for Man United, but Tottenham want an important fee for the player. The message from Tottenham is clear – important proposal, or nothing.

“Sofyan Amrabat is still waiting for Man United, but let’s see what happens with Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek, because their futures are crucial to determine what United can do. Fred has left for Fenerbahce, but they need one more sale in that position. As for Amrabat, he’s still not training with Fiorentina because he wants to wait for United until the end.”

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes has been criticised for his performances in the opening few matches of the season and former defender Rio Ferdinand has been left with his “mouth wide open” at the flak the midfielder has been taking.

“To go 2-0 down in any game at home, I’ve played in games at Old Trafford where a team has gone a goal or two up and we’ve managed to bring it back,” Ferdinand said on FIVE’s YouTube channel.

“Yes I know it’s different times, but that’s where you have to draw your inspiration from and have to try and find some consistency and inspiration from – and the biggest gain out of all of this will be Bruno Fernandes.

“I swear to you the flack he has been getting this last week. I’ve been sitting there with my mouth wide open, thinking ‘how dare these people talk like that’.

“He’s the most creative player at this point in the season so far. He’s the first player to get 10 goal opportunities created for his team-mates out of any body. Since he’s come to the club he’s out performed every other player in terms of goals created chances made and assists.”
